How about those flowers putting on a dazzling performance in the florist shop? The colors are so rich and perfect—no artist could possibly duplicate their beauty. Think of a deep, placid lake in the mountains: Is there anything more beautiful than its gleaming water as smooth as a mirror reflecting the beauty all around it? More »

In the opening of his Letter to the Colossians, Paul hinted that the first step in our walk of faith is to enter into the presence of the Lord through the power of the Holy Spirit (Colossians 1:9-12). Paul knew that this was the only way the Colossians would find the transformation that Jesus wanted to give them. But last April, as the banners went up in St. Peter's Square calling for the speedy canonization of Karol Wojtyla, my thoughts gratefully turned to a few occasions when I had the opportunity to pray in the presence of Pope John Paul II. On October 23, 2005, nearly eight thousand Chileans stood cheering in St. Peter's Square as Pope Benedict XVI canonized their country's second saint. The Jesuit priest, whose rugged features smiled down at them from a tapestry on the basilica's façade, was "truly a contemplative in action," said the pope. More »
