Before anything was created, even before time itself began, God had a plan, a plan that encompassed everything and every person that he would ever create. As Scripture proclaims, God has "blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 1:3). Scripture goes on to say that God "chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love" (1:4), and that he "destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ" (1:5). In so many paintings and sculptures we see Mary kneeling, with her hands folded and head bowed, prayerful and peaceful. Many of these artistic works convey the sense of serenity that we often associate with the Mother of God, a peace that came from quietly pondering God's actions in her heart. More »

Ever since the third century, when efforts were made to meld the four gospels into one, the church has insisted on maintaining the separate integrity of each account of the good news. The gospels were written at different times for different communities, and though they all present the same revealed truth of salvation through Christ, each one tells the story in a unique way, highlighting a different aspect of the gospel and of Jesus himself. A poorly repaired plaster Jesus lay on a cushion, beneath which was a note. Little Sister Magdeleine, foundress of the Little Sisters of Jesus, had carefully written: "This infant Jesus is a precious souvenir of the beginnings of the foundation. He has brought numerous graces. Let us keep him, even if he isn't very artistic." More »

My five-year-old niece snuggles in closer to my daughter and another cousin. As she smiles up at the older girls, I can tell she feels safe and content. She concentrates on the moment. All three girls finger their rosaries. More »
