Holy Spirit, Enlighten Me
This Simple Prayer Continues to Sustain Me

“Holy Spirit, enlighten me.” I first heard these words thirty years ago as I sat in my sophomore religion class. Our teacher, Sr. Mary Agnes, told us that whenever we faced a difficult moment—perhaps when we were stuck on a test—we should pray these four words. Over the years, those words found a way of sneaking back into my mind. I remember the first time I prayed them in earnest, during a college exam, and the calming influence the prayer had. Years later, I understood that Sr. Mary Agnes did not necessarily mean “test” as an academic assessment; she meant the tests of life.
